The term “hosting” doesn't describe just one service, but a set of services which provide various functions to a domain name. Having a website and emails, as an example, are two separate services even though in the general case they come together, so a lot of people consider them as one single service. In reality, each and every domain name has a several DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the former is a numeric IP address, that identifies where the website for the domain name is loaded from, while the second one is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that manages the e-mails for the domain. For example, an A record would be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record is mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a site or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain address has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the browser request or the email will be directed to the correct server. The idea behind using separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you may have your site hosted by one provider and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Website Hosting

If you have a website hosting account through our company and you would like to point either your site or your e-mails to an alternative service provider, it will take you literally only 2 clicks to do it. Our Hepsia CP offers an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you want to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it is not going to take more than a couple of mouse clicks either to add them. You can also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a certain MX record is going to have. The propagation of each record that you change or set up isn't going to take more than several hours and if required, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will remain active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Accessing and changing the A or MX records for any of your domain names or subdomains is extremely easy if you purchase a semi-dedicated server plan through us. The accounts are handled by using our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel, which includes a section committed to the DNS records of your domains. The latter is going to be listed alphabetically and you can click on any of them to see both the A and the MX records. Modifying any record is as simple as entering the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even when you have never dealt with such matters before, you won't encounter any issues if you choose to move your site or emails to some other provider while keeping the second service with our company. If necessary, you can also create additional MX records and set a certain priority based on the recommendations of the new provider.
